I welcome you todsy to what is considered the worlds ugliest flower, Amorphophallus titanum. You can imagine no dobt why part of the biological name is  “phophallus titanum” , but why, oh why, is it considered ugly.   Perhaps because  the inflorescence’s deep red color and texture create the illusion that the spathe is a piece of meat.

Now certainly the odor is unattractive as it resembles that of a rotting corpse which attracts corpse eating insects (a boon for the flowers polination). It can reacch as high as eight feet which makes it impressive.

But I still wonder why it is considered ugly.

Have you ever gone to a nudist beach’ Have you had a good look at those human bodies. Compared to what is presented there the flower is exceedingly beautiful.

But really we all know that there is nothing that is intrinsically beautiful or ugly… Both are a product of our mind. Yet we chase after beauty like a fly after carrion and we try to make ourselves beautiful.

Women, and now men chase after besuty as a signal that they fear what aging can bring. The peacock has that marvelous tail to attrct the peahen. But it does not cling and crave to that beauty. Nature uses pysiology that is natural to attract, and I suppose that nailing one’s nose and tongue with a metal bar today may be considered a sexual “come on”, though it is called by the more delicate name of piercing.

Is it that nowadays more than even fifty years ago there is a fear that one lacks the natural attributes of attraction for the  opposite (or even the same sex).

I live in the arms of nature and the truth is I have never seen a tree or a flower, a fox or even an ant cry because it feels ugly.

Perhaps the human ugliness is seen as being inside. That cannot be so, of course, although the mind is a great deceiver.  In University I grew up with the slogan “black is beautiful”.  Black is not beautiful, but it is wonderful. It is wonderful that there is such diversity within nature.

I will tell you a little story that points out the folly of human mind distortions.  When I lived in Los Angeles my best friend was a guy called Leroy Miller. He was a spitting image of Sammy Davis Junior and one day visiting his home he told me that on a visit down South he was travelling with three southern friends.  They were, as was pretty normal at the time, stopped by the police. Papers were deliverd and one of the policemen took Leroy aside and declared, ” Okay what are you doing with these NIGGERS”.

So black is not always black.  and justice is seldom justice. And freedom is not always freedom.

Italians are ugly brecause they are Mafia … Jews are ugly because they run the world and are responsible for our money problems… Gypsies are ugly because they steal .. Immigrants are ugly because they steal our work… Is there anyone who is not UGLY?????

We can’t even let the Amorphophallus titanum be beautiful.

There was a song I learned as a child it was “All things bright and beutiful all creatures great and small; all things wise and wonderful the Lord God made them all”.

I was ten at the time and a Christian (now I am follow Buddha Dharma) and I wondered then “if God created all the beautiful who created the choir boys and the congregation”, who to me at the time seemed very ugly. I also wondered if being beautiful also made what was beautiful also wise and wonderful. I wondered where all the beautiful people were.. and it seemed a pity, because my dog and the bluebells in the fields and the woods were all exceedingy beautiful

Now I know there is no ugly or beautiful, no correct or incorrect, no right or wrong… There is only what is natural in accord with the Dharma.

What about you ???

After a delay here I am again with another attempt to add a grain more of sane Buddha Dharma to the world.

It is not easy, for it seems that in a stained world of great turmoil people want more lightness. It seems that they want to compensate for the voice inside which declares, “there is something very wrong here”.

Of course, they are looking more outside than inside.

I came across a note on the Night Blooming Cereus and thought of all those who sleep soundly at night and never even know that there are Night Blooming Flowers. Then I considered how most people are with regards to the Dharma. They are sleeping when Dharma has a chance to bloom.

I thought then, I suppose by association, of  Zong mi, who declared:

“In essence all Dharmas are like a dream, and from the very beginning nothing is of any consern; mind and objects are intrinsically tranquil, and it is not that they are now for the first time empty. It is because we are deluded about this fact and take things to exist that we perceive matters like prosperity and decay, or high and low status.

Because such matters may be agreeable or disagreeable, they give rise to feelings such as love and hate. Once emotions arise, we become bound in all sorts of suffering.

But when they are created and as in a dream what gain or loss could there be?”

Of course it is not asy to make this mental transformation of seeing what appears real as a dream.

In Chan practice we develop the five Chan paramiters: Carrying with us like a presence, the experiences of Vacuity, Oneness, Clear Comprehension, Impermanance, and the Force of Life. This takes practice and dedication, but the normal persn not within a Chan mould will have to try to make this trnsition rather like a magicion takes a rabbit out of a hat.

Why not try it… Convert your day to day ramble in Stained Samsara into a  dream… Leave being concerns and an aggitated mind.Perhaps you will  even see the Night Blooming Dharma Flowers.

Among many people there is an innate fear of bats. It is a shame really, for they are wonderful creatures.

This morning, working on repairs to a Chan Temple wall I dislodged a bad from its hideaway of darkness. It fell to the floor and I feared for its life, so I instructed a companion who was below to move it gently to a dark place so that we could find a better home for it later. We placed a small carpet under it.

It was alive and seemed so helpless, so small no larger than a mouse. Occasionally, it stretched its wings and they were each five or six inches from body to tip.

Bats are wonderful flying mammals The forelimbs are webbed and developed as wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. They fly by flapping their spread out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane.

Do you know how small a bat can be as an adult?

The smallest bat is the Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat, measuring just over an inch in length.

We left it quietly and continued working. Suddenly there was a scuffling and the bat righted itself, thrust forward and stretching those wings flew out through the door.

I smiled. Nature had generated energy to the Life Force and the survival of the bat was assured.

Now this is just a description of the event, but what is important is the experience that the appearance of the bat generated… First an experience that was surprise, then the experience accompanying concern….. then a distance from the experiences but not from the mind. Then finally when the bat took off a great experience called joy that the Life Force had triumphed once more.

If the world is truly one in your heart… A part of you died here … and every moment more of your life is slipping away. .. There are more ways of dying than by the death of the body.

I wonder if anyone has the guts to really look at this page every day and countenance what is presented and then sit back and do nothing and say nothing… The Dharma is about true compassion … what everyone is looking for is weak Identity love.

What you will see her in this dharma page is Identity… Your Identity if you do nothing and say nothing.

I’d like to introduce here first a Dance ritual performed by the Australian Aborigines. Like many other older and wiser tribes, the education of children is more than a sterile book filled classroom.

In this ritual a man wades into the tidal pools in search of fish. Suddenly he  on something and begins to scream. He has stepped upon a stone fish that appeared innocent and identical to a rock. In the ritual the dancer writhes in agony, falling upon the ground.

Actually a clay model with 13 wooden spines projecting from the spine is used in the dance to replicate the stone fish.

So what is so terrible. It is the most deadly of fish. It is poisonous  and when the man writhes upon the ground accompanied by a song of death the child gets the idea.

It is the most venomous fish known and is about two feet long and is so well camoflaged lying a couple of feet below the pool top that it is easily undetected… Its attack lasts just over a tenth of a second and although the human creature is not its target. Watch out.

The sting causes excruciating pain and a tremendous swelling rapidly develops with death of tissues.  The effects are muscle weakness, temporary paralysis and shock, which may result in death if not treated.

There is no fault with the fish that is protecting itself from predators like Manta and Shark, but the fish reminds me of the human creature.

HEre we are walking about is the streets, working perhaps and an at home with an aire of human innocence… The camoflage of our Identity masks, but we are as dangerous perhaps more so, for our human venom hurts and causes sufferingand in the young marks their lies forever.

Our poison is Aversion and Greed. Just two words, but the execution of aversion and greed kills the minds of children and causes suffering in adults.

But you no doubt are innocent. Examine yourself.

You may consider yourself a good person… a mask … until you let go of that Identity, the me and mine you are a human stonefish .  Until you are one with nature with more than that foolish intellect that you have, or the emotional cloptrap you are just a human stonefish.

And really on reflection the Stone fish is superior. They say that beauty is only skin deep.  The stone fish wins out there hands down.

It seems that very few people care about Dharma, that is to say about being a natural human creature that lives in harmony with all other living things.

It is true that hundreds of thousnds do lip service to the theme and would vote for laws that punish animal cruelty… But a vote is an easy thing to cast … you jut put an X in the correct place and slip a small piece of paper into a box.

Then you can forget it for you have done your part. Probably you even have so little interest that you will just wait until you see some footnote in some uninterested newspaper, written by an uninterested reporter … and that is that.

But how many really do anything?  You may support the idea to stop animals from reproducing. there are too many dogs and cats in the world… So I say then we should force all humans to stop reproducing… When the Chinese tried there was international outcry.. It was against human rights… and animal rights , have they all evaporated because an animal does not please us.

Dharma must be displaced always to make room for our likes and dislikes, our greed.  All we really are interested in fundamentally is SEX and all we are really pre ocupied with … if we get all that greed demands is DEATH.  But surprisngly DEATH seems to rise in importance as SEX seems to fade in importance.   But we are ony concerned about OUR DEATH and OUR SEX.  To hell with everyone else.

I think it would be a good idea to project on our televison screens every day.  The number of animals destroyed by our hands … the numbr of species extinguished … the number of trees cut down to provide wood for human greed and paper to increase hisignorane throgh newspapers and books that are nothing more than tools to keep the wheels of commerce running.

Well that is the way it is.. How many dogs are alaughtered today? You have no idea… How many trees have been felled today … how much polution have we individually contributedto today.

And even if we conserve by putting residuals in the right place … you can be sure that someone is making a buck.
